ELAC distributes prosecution handbook for coastal laws to the PNP

The Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC) recently distributed the book, entitled: "Mending Nets" to the police prosecutors of the coastal municipalities in the province of Bohol.  The distribution was made during the prosecution training conducted by the Legal Assistance for Effective Law Enforcement Program (LAELEP) which is jointly sponsored by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (Bohol Chapter) and the Provincial Government of Bohol.

Survey off Bohol gets stalled

THE seismic survey in search of natural gas and oil off Bohol was suspended beginning last Thursday, because of unresolved conditions in case of any damage on the environment, an environmentalist-lawyer said.

They also have yet to finalize compensation for affected fishers and complete a study on how the project will affect biodiversity.

Groups ask for TRO v. oil hunt

GROUPS opposed to the oil and natural gas exploration between southern Cebu and Bohol are seeking an injunction from the Regional Trial Court (RTC) in Tagbilaran City.

The 13 complainants, through lawyer Raul Barbarona, are asking the court to declare null and void the certificate of non-coverage that Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 7 issued to NorAsian Energy Ltd.

Oil exploration worries environmentalists

CEBU CITY -- An oil exploration project by an Australian firm in the Cebu-Bohol Strait before the end of the month has alarmed a local environmental group, which calls it a calamity “worse than a typhoon” for fishermen.

Vessels and fishers must stay 8.5 kilometers away from the exploration ship for about a month. Diving and swimming are also prohibited within 10 km from it.

ELAC main office transferred to Bohol

The Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC) has moved its main office to Tagbilaran City in Bohol.  The transfer was decided by the Board of Trustees during the General Assembly conducted in Puerto Princesa City in January 2009.

The main office is now located at 2nd Floor, Knights of Columbus Building, K of C Drive, Tagbilaran City.  Tele/Fax Number (6338) 5017933.
